About this directory
The chevra kadisha, the holy society, performs what the tradition calls chesed shel emes, the truest act of kindness, because it can never be repaid. Its members carry out taharah, the ritual washing and purification of the body, dress the deceased in simple white shrouds, and keep shmirah, an unbroken watch, from death until burial.
This work is done quietly and without payment for the honor of it. Communities organize their chevra kadisha through synagogues and funeral homes, and many welcome new volunteers. The listings here help families and volunteers reach the burial societies that serve their community.
